What Additives Are in Bottled Water?

There are many varieties of bottled water. Bottled water companies are subject to state regulations and the codes regulated by the International Bottled Water Association. Bottles containing purified, mineral, distilled, spring, artesian well water, sparkling water or another form of bottled water could contain additives. Additives could also vary depending upon varying state standards. There are a few basic foundational additives commonly used by most water-bottling companies.

  1. Magnesium Sulfate

    • Purified bottled water includes the additive, magnesium sulfate, which is intended for use as a flavor enhancer. Magnesium will not be added to bottled water labeled as spring or mineral water.

    Potassium Chloride

    • Potassium chloride is a natural salt mineral that is found also in bottled water. Potassium chloride has many uses, including the treatment of low-potassium blood levels, dehydration and high blood pressure in some instances, to name a few.

    Potassium Bicarbonate

    • Potassium bicarbonate is odorless, colorless and slightly salty. It is added to foods to regulate their pH. It is added to bottled water for carbonation and the taste enhancement.

    Fluoride

    • Fluoride is sometimes added to water by bottling companies. There are three types of fluoride additives, listed as follows, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Fluorosilicic acid (hydrofluorosilicate, FSA or HFS) is a water-based solution used by many water fluoridation programs in the U.S. Sodium fluorosilicate is a a dry additive, dissolved into a solution before being added to water. Sodium fluoride is another dry additive used in small water systems and dissolved into a solution before being added to water.

      The Food and Drug Administration does not require bottlers to list the fluoride content in a bottle of water, according to the Centers for Disease Control, but does require fluoride additives to be listed. Fluoride is added to water to help reduce the risk of tooth decay.
